App State Physics Major to Help Select the Mars 2020 Landing Site

Appalachian State Physics Major Benjamin Migirditch has been selected in a national competition to participate in Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program. Over a 10-week period this summer he will be working with Dr. Lindsay Hays at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab on a project to select the landing site for the Mars 2020 rover. The 2020 rover will be car-sized (about 10 feet long, 9 feet wide, and 7 feet tall) and capable of imaging, soil studies, terrain assessment (including feasibility of digging), and serve as a surface weather station to monitor Mars’ climate.
