Fall 2026 Waitlist
⚠️ CRITICAL REGISTRATION NOTE: You must add both the Lecture AND the Lab to your cart before hitting the submit button. Registering for only one will result in a registration error code.
Applies to the following Intro-Level PHY/AST lectures and labs:
Astronomy: AST 1021/1011, AST 1022/1012
Physics: PHY 1121/1111, 1122/1112, PHY 1123/1113, PHY 1124/1114, PHY 1170/1160, PHY 1180/1161, PHY 1812, PHY 1814
What to do if your section is full:
Be Flexible: Look for alternative open sections where you can adjust your schedule to fit a PHY or AST seat.
Build a Backup Schedule: Register for other classes you need to maintain your hours. (Minimum full-time status is 12 credit hours; 15–16 hours is preferred).
Submit the Waitlist Form: If you have tried every available 1000-level section and cannot get a seat, submit the form above.
- Processing Time: This is a manual process. Please allow 24–48 hours for a reply (excluding weekends). Permits are processed in the order received.
- Priority: Hickory (HKY) campus students and seniors are prioritized for open seats.
- Next Steps: Keep checking for open seats on your own until the 5th day of the semester. Frequently check your student email for updates from cookm5@appstate.edu.
Other Course Permits & Overrides
Note: You must obtain the course instructor's permission before filling out these forms.
Permit for Other Courses
Use this form if you are encountering registration errors for a Physics course not listed in the intro section above, if the course requires instructor/chair approval, or if you need a non-capacity override for a 1000-level course.
Time Conflict Override:
Use this form if you need a time conflict override specifically for an asynchronous online course in physics or astronomy.
PHY/AST Time Conflict Override
You will receive an email from cookm5@appstate.edu with instructions on how to register for the course once the permit has been submitted.
Math Pre-Req/Coreq Information
Policy Notice: We do not waive math prerequisites under any circumstances. Lack of foundational math skills is the primary reason students struggle in these courses.
What does "Demonstrated Readiness for College-Level Math" mean?
To register for AST 1021, PHY 1121, PHY 1170, or PHY 1123, you must satisfy at least one of the following:
- A passing grade on the App State Math Placement Test
- An ACT Math score of 22 or higher
- An SAT Math score of 550 or higher
- Existing college credit for any math or statistics course
Required Math Corequisites
| Physics/Astronomy Course | Required Math Corequisite / Prerequisite |
| PHY 1121 | MAT 1010, MAT 1020, or MAT 1025 (MAT 1035 Business Math does NOT count) |
| PHY 1123 | None if Calculus Readiness score is ≥ 12. Otherwise, MAT 1020 or MAT 1025. |
| PHY 1124 | Prereq: PHY 1123 or 1170 (Min grade of C-). Note: Not open to those with credit for PHY 2010. |
| PHY 1170 | MAT 1110 (Calculus I) |
| PHY 1180 | MAT 1120 (Calculus II) |
Math FAQ
"I can't get into PHY 1121/1123 because the required MAT 1020/1025 classes are full. What do I do?"
Take the Calculus Readiness Placement test and score a 12 or higher.
It takes about 24 hours for the score to hit the system.
Taking this test does not force you to take calculus.
If you score a 12 or higher, the department will issue you a permit to bypass the MAT 1020/1025 restriction and join PHY 1121 or PHY 1123.
- Visit this page for instructions on taking the placement test.
"I took AP Math or Transfer Math. Do I still need to take the placement test?"
AP Credit: If you already have AP credit for Calculus I (MAT 1110), you do not need the test. If you are currently taking AP Calculus, you should take the test just in case (an AP score of 3+ will ultimately override it).
Transfer Credit: If you have verified college transfer credit for Pre-Calculus (MAT 1025) or Calculus I (MAT 1110), you do not need to take the test.
Drop / Add & Late Changes
The form can be found on the Registrar's Resource page.
- Late Add: This form is to be used to add courses ONLY after day 5 of the fall/spring semester (day 2 of a summer term) and no later than the UNC “Census” date of the term.
- Late Withdrawal: Most course withdrawals can be completed by the student through AppalNet SelfService. This form is to be used to withdrawal from courses ONLY after day 5 of a fall/spring semester (day 2 of summer term) when withdrawing from a linked course (lab or lecture only) OR when switching sections due to an administrative adjustment, OR when switching levels of the same discipline.
- After the last day to withdraw from a class and use withdrawal credits, you can only use the Request for Course Withdrawal Policy Exception form.
