Physics Labs and Demonstrations

Welcome to the Appalachian State University Catalog of Physics Demonstrations. Here you will find many of the physics demonstrations we use to enhance classroom learning. To begin your search, select an area of physics below. When you locate the desired demonstration, complete the accompanying request form (ASU faculty only please).

View generic request form.

This catalog is ordered according to the Physics Instructional Resource Association (PIRA) classification scheme. Each area is subdivided into Topics and Concepts. For example:

1A10.20 Calibrated Masses
1 Area (Mechanics)
A Topic (Measurement)
10 Concept (Basic Units)
20 Name (Calibrated Masses)

Please give us 24 hours advance notice for all demonstrations. You are always welcome to visit us in the downstairs stockroom to browse demonstrations and fill out a written request form. If you need a demonstration not listed in the catalog or would like for us to implement your own design, please allow additional time for construction and materials location.

"In the matter of physics the first lessons should contain nothing but what is experimental and interesting to see. A pretty experiment is in itself often more valuable than twenty formulae extracted from our minds." ~ Albert Einstein
