Research Experiences for Students

There are many choices for local research opportunities with faculty in the Physics & Astronomy Department at Appalachian. Students are encouraged to contact faculty at Appalachian about research opportunities. Information about the research in the department can be found on the Department's research page.

There are also research experiences outside of Appalachian. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are programs that enable undergraduate students to become actively involved in a summer research project at a participating REU institution. Some of the REU programs available to our students are described at the NSF REU website.

Other internship opportunities exist as well, including historically companies like the Lord Corporation (Cary), Borg-Warner (Asheville), U.S. Steel Buildings (Boone), and others. Namely, the NC Space Grant partnership provides internship opportunities and student grant support:

For more information on internships and REU programs, contact the Undergraduate Program Director, Dr. Brooke Hester, at hesterbc@appstate.edu.
